Students at Middle Smithfield receive six years of formal music instruction. In grades kindergarten through five, students receive two 35 minute classes of music instruction in a 6 day cycle. In this general music instruction students practice the basic music elements of melody, rhythm, form, harmony, dynamics and tempo. We also practice Dr. John Feierabend's philosophy of educating children to be "tuneful, beatful, and artful".
Throughout the grade levels students use classroom instruments to practice their music skills. In third grade students are able to further develop these skills by learning to read and play music on the recorder.
At the end of third grade students are given the opportunity to sign up for in-school instruction on a band instrument. The instrumental teacher gives weekly lessons to 4th and 5th grade students who have chosen to be a part of this program. As students progress to an appropriate level, they are invited to join the after-school band.
All 4th and 5th grade students are also invited to further develop their vocal performance skills by singing in the after-school chorus. This group is open to all 4th and 5th grade students and meets for one hour a week. Both the band and chorus perform two evening concerts a year as well as in-school performances.
All these experiences provide Middle Smithfield students with the opportunity to begin a lifelong journey of music performance, enjoyment, and appreciation.
