lol

An Internet abbreviation standing for "laughing out loud". It is usually used on chat servers or text messaging, but has started popping up in letters and even *gasp* formal English writing. In more cases than not, a person typing "lol" is actually not laughing out loud, but merely finds any previously only marginally amusing.
