Reading
The process of becoming a reader should be joyful and exciting. There is nothing better than hearing a child say, "I can read this all by myself!
The process of reading includes:-
Phonological awareness
-
Phonics
-
Fluency
-
Vocabulary
-
Comprehension
(These are often called the Five Big Ideas in Reading!)
While you may know the last four, the first one, phonological awareness, will ensure that your child becomes a confident reader as they "Break the Code"!
A phoneme is a sound. When we were young our mothers would say, "Just sound it out", now we know that is important but there are other skills that can be helpful.
Phonological awareness includes:
-
Rhyme and alliteration,
-
Rhyme makes you listen to the end of the word
-
Alliteration makes you focus on the first sound of the word.
-
-
Phoneme identification
-
Can the child tell the you the sound that he/she hears?
-
-
Phoneme segmentation and blending,
-
Can you break the word apart into all of its sounds?
-
Can you take the sounds and put them together to make a word?
-
-
Sentence segmenting,
-
Can you say how many words are in a sentence?
-
-
Onset and rime
-
What is the first sound, and what is the rest of the word?
-
-
Syllables
-
Can you break the word apart into syllables?
-
All of these are oral language and need no writing, however a child needs to be able to do these to become a good reader.
These Websites that will help with these concepts: Just click on the words and it will link you to these.
The most important thing you can do with your child is read to them and with them!
These links have numerous games, stories, rhymes, fingerplays and videos that encourage your child to have fun as they learn to read!

Classroom Routines:
The students wrote these rules on the first day of school.
- We will raise our hands to speak.
- We will listen to our friends and the teacher.
- We will keep our hands and feet to ourselves.
- We will walk our feet quietly in the classroom and the hall.
- We will keep our classroom neat and tidy.
- We will be nice to each other.
We try to get 6 things on a smiley face so that we can get a star slip.
We are trying to earn class stars. We can only get a class star from someone who is not in our class. To date we have gotten 30 stars, when we reach 50 stars, we will have a celebration.
