Missing: One Stuffed Rabbit ~ The History of Rainbow
Back in 2003, Mrs. Lloyd (that’s right, Mrs. not Miss...as in Miss Lloyd's mom!) was teaching second grade at Smithfield Elementary School. Her class had just gotten brand new reading books that year and inside was a story called Missing: One Stuffed Rabbit. At the time, they were learning about different environments and habitats, including savannas and rainforests. One day while she was out shopping, Mrs. Lloyd saw a stuffed baboon on a store shelf that “looked like he needed a good home”. She couldn’t resist leaving the baboon there in the store and since her class was learning about these animals at school, she thought he would be the perfect stuffed animal to use as a class pet, just like the class had done in the story in their reading books. When she brought him to school, the students loved him and named him “Rainbow” because of his rainbow-colored bottom.
For the next 3 years until she retired (after over 38 years of teaching), Mrs. Lloyd continued to use Rainbow as the class pet that each of her students took home, wrote about his adventures, and then returned him the next day to share his diary with their classmates. When Miss Lloyd began teaching, she continued the tradition in her second grade class at Resica.
Rainbow has visited well over 250 homes in the last decade! This is the 12th year that he will be happily traveling to a new group of second grade students’ homes. He certainly can’t wait to meet everyone and experience so many exciting adventures this year!
